On 9 December 2014, the Post Office closed permanently having first opened in 1889. The closure is a tremendous loss as the PO and Shop has been a focal point of the village, the hub of the community and meeting place for many. The shop ceases trading on 20 December so this is a double blow and will mean a major change to the lives of many villagers.
On 12 December, villagers met at the PO/Shop to show appreciation and to give thanks to Ron Scott, who travelled daily from Bristol for almost 20 years, for being sub-postmaster, for running the shop and bringing newspapers. A presentation to Mr and Mrs Scott, who are retiring, was made on behalf of the Parish Council by Phyllis Thorne, a Parish Councillor and a villager since birth.
Together with a Post Office official, the Parish Council is still seeking someone to provide an outreach service in the village hall.
Monkton Farleigh has a thriving Women’s Institute. We meet every 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. At these regular meetings we invite speakers who give topical talks on a wide variety of topics and issues and demonstrations, often with hands on activities during the evening for the group. Members bring along books to exchange, sell produce they have grown or made and finish off the evening with coffee, tea and a chat – maybe wine if we have anything to celebrate! There is also the regular ‘Flower of the Month’ competition where members exhibit their entries in order to win the coveted cup presented at the AGM. We play in Whist and Skittles leagues with varying degrees of success with occasional friendly matches amongst ourselves during the year.
As well as these monthly get-togethers we enjoy lunches each month around the local hostelries and numerous visits to places of interest throughout the year. We also have access to all the Wiltshire Federation workshops, activities and holidays arranged by the County Headquarters in Devizes.
Each year, all members are invited to contribute their ideas and interests towards the annual programme.
Annual membership currently costs £34.70. Guests, together with anyone who would like to come along and try us out, pay £3.00 for the evening.
Do come along and see what you think. We are always open to ideas from new members. The National Women’s Institute, founded in 1915 celebrates its 100th Anniversary next year. We continually strive to keep our members up to date in this ever-changing 21st century.

The village council recently decided that it was time to start using a website to improve communication between the council and the parish. This site was put together and is hosted by a local resident for free. Over time we’ll publish more and more information here. Agendas and minutes from our meetings. News that affects the villages. Articles that might interest residents.
You can sign up to get any news via email. Please do so. You wouldn’t want to miss anything important…
